The goal of the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHHD), National Institutes of Health (NIH) supported Minority Health Research Training program in Health Disparities (MHRT) training grant (T37MD008636) is to engage undergraduates and graduate students in national and international community-based participatory research, socio-behavioral research, research in tropical medicine, infectious diseases and related health sciences in order to increase the number of scientists who are underrepresented in sciences, in hopes they will conduct research that address health disparities.
The MHRT program is a 2 semester (Spring and Summer) research training program designed to provide directed research coursework at UH Manoa where students learn to conduct research. Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students will conduct an 8-week summer research project while graduate students will conduct 3+ months research project focusing on health and health disparities locally or internationally.
This program is open to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and U.S. nationals from health disparity communities who are currently in an undergraduate (3+ years of undergrad) or graduate program. Students from all academic disciplines are welcome to apply. You must be enrolled in classes during the Spring semester in order to be eligible. For the purposes of this program, the U.S. Government has defined members of health disparity communities underrepresented in higher education as follows: African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans, Alaskan Natives, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders, and the medically underserved (i.e., socio-economically disadvantaged individuals in rural and urban areas). Students of Filipino and Vietnamese ancestry are also eligible. Refer to: https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-20-031.html
