The goal of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), National Institutes of Health (NIH) in supporting the Maximizing Access to Research Careers (MARC) training grant (T34GM141986) is to encourage undergraduates who are from underrepresented demographic groups in STEM to seek research careers in biomedical research. Underrepresented groups include those who identify as Native Hawaiian, other Pacific Islanders, Filipinos, Native Americans, Alaskan Natives, African Americans, Hispanics, underrepresented Asians (e.g. Cambodian, Vietnamese, Laotian), as well as those with documented disabilities. A STEM workforce encompassing underrepresented groups will bring about an expansion of novel ideas to the biomedical research field.

MARC-Hawaii is a two-year training program designed to provide 6 (six) students per year with the technical, operational, and professional skills they need to apply to, be accepted in, and successfully complete PhD and MD/PhD programs at research-intensive universities.
